2.2 Communications

The ENVOY features 4 communications modes: direct, inbuilt 3G modem, inbuilt spread spectrum radio (option), or

communications to a smart instrument using MODBUS or SDI-12.

2.2.1 Direct Connection

A direct connection is achieved with a standard straight-through serial cable. The ENVOY is a DCE (Data

Communication Equipment) device. A limited version of the RS232 port is supported with no hardware ﬂow control.

A standard DB9-to-DB9 cable can connect the computer DTE device to the Datalogger DCE device. The ENVOY

RS232 port is not electrically isolated. Connection to an AC-powered computer may cause ground loops, leading to

measurement problems.

Output: Signal Out of the ENVOY to a RS232 device

Input: Signal In to the ENVOY from a RS232 device

A design feature of the ENVOY is that when a cable is connected to the RS232 port, the internal modem is

automatically disconnected, and similarly when the cable is removed the internal modem is automatically

reconnected. This ensures that the ENVOY is online without having to remember to reconnect cables after a local

direct connection is made.

2.3 Mounting the ENVOY

The ENVOY has been designed for ease of installation. Provision has been made for the backing plate to be secured

to a cabinet or wall with 4 fasteners. The body of the ENVOY simply slides onto the backing plate and is locked in

place with the thumb screw.
